Supporters and shareholders of Aston Villa have joined together to fight what they see as the "endless cycle of under-achievement" their club has suffered for the past 20 years.
|
| Press Release - 5th May 2004. | Rejuvenation of Shareholders Association
|
After over a decade of dedicated work on the Aston Villa Shareholders Association, Mr Buck Chinn has stood down as Chairman of The Association in order to hand over the torch to a younger group of individuals to take the re-energised Association forward. Mr Chinn said "at the age of 72 I decided it was time to move aside for a younger generation, I can now only hope that Mr Ellis follows my example and steps down from the Board of Aston Villa and allows the club to move forward in the direction our manager is calling for, with clear long term planning and adequate funding".
Several key members of pressure group Villa Fans Combined (VFC) have been voted onto the committee after the Shareholders Association members voted unanimously to support the aims of VFC in bringing about roots and branch change at Aston Villa. Dennis Mortimer accepted the invitation to become Patron of the Association. (See Appendix 1 for new committee).
Jonathan Fear, the new chairman, said, "We should like to pay tribute to Buck Chinn for his steadfastness and commitment to the cause of small shareholders and season ticket holders. He has fought long and hard for the rights of ordinary fans and I am sure that they will join us in our thanks to him for all his work. The intention now is to re-energise the Shareholders Association and increase its membership to allow both shareholders and non-shareholders a greater say in what happens at our club. Associate members (non shareholders) can now join, with their annual fees (£7.00 full, £5.00 concessionary) going towards buying shares in Aston Villa. It is also a fantastic opportunity for individual shareholders to have a single organisation in which to express their views and have a say in the future of the club."
