VFC and the Aston Villa Shareholders Association felt that if the club could not mark the sterling contribution made to Aston Villa by these players, then it was up to the fans to do so.
Ian Taylor and Alan Wright were amongst the club's longest servants and have always given 100% commitment to the club. In the opinion of many fans, the manner in which they were released by the club failed to show them the respect that is due to them - and it highlights the alienation of the Board from so much of the Villa community.

Small of stature Big of heart
Always there to play your part
For nine long years a Holte End hero
Giving all expecting zero
A Wembley winner on that fine spring day
Leeds dispatched without delay
Sometimes the smallest pods contain the sweetest pea
Wrighty the Mighty Atom of V.P.
Winning headers against the odds,
Sliding tackles rip up the sods
Of the Villa turf you graced with style
The finest left-back for a country mile
You've took the cheers you've lived the dream
Played for the greatest Football Team
In the Villa Hall of Fame you've truly made your mark
Wrighty the Mighty Atom of Villa Park
"It's Wright, it's Wright, it's Alan Alan Wright,
He's got no hair, but we don't care, Alan,Alan Wright
