VFC and the Aston Villa Shareholders Association felt that if the club could not mark the sterling contribution made to Aston Villa by these players, then it was up to the fans to do so.

Ian Taylor and Ian Taylor were amongst the club's longest servants and have always given 100% commitment to the club. In the opinion of many fans, the manner in which they were released by the club failed to show them the respect that is due to them - and it highlights the alienation of the Board from so much of the Villa community.

Ian Taylor A-V-F-C
Loves the Villa to the Nth degree
His black face shines wet in the heat of battle
Midfield anchor, block and tackle

A thousand scars beneath his socks
Legs that carry him box to box
Depend on Ian he will not shirk
Never afraid of hard graft and work

He plays the game with heart and soul
Known to score the odd crucial goal
While forgotten mercenaries dig their gold
His legend will forever be told

For evermore his name will tower
Wembley was his finest hour
A Villa legend like Shaw or Sid
A Brummie we're proud to call 'our kid'

A handsome face as black as night
A gleaming smile of sparkling white
Worshipped by the Villa crowd
The Holte it sings his name out loud

On frozen pitches through rain and snow
The Fancy Dans don't want to know
He runs his heart out in every game
And joins the few in the hall of fame

Villa man through and through
Blood in his veins runs claret and blue
Even when prospects are less than zero
We thank God for Ian our true Villa hero
